A speaker management system (SMS) is a specialised electronic device designed to optimise and control the audio output of speakers. They are largely divided into analogue and digital systems. The SMS 480 has a compressor limiter on each input and output channel. You can use this to control the dynamic range and unpredictable transients to minimise clipping and thereby equipment damage. The 4 input channels also integrate noise gates. Leveraging the noise gate, limiter and multiple gain settings, the SMS 480 offers advanced dynamic range control across the audio frequency.
The SMS 480 integrates a useful feature that allows you to introduce a time-based delay of up to 218 milliseconds to the audio output. Interestingly, the SMS 480 automatically converts the delay time to an equivalent distance in feet and metres for added ease while configuring line array systems and setting loudspeaker delay stack and fills. Countering line delay issues significantly improves sonic intelligibility and clarity.
In live audio, acoustic feedback is one of the most unpleasant sounds and often a key reason for equipment damage. Audio feedback, commonly known as acoustic feedback, is a positive feedback situation that usually occurs when an acoustic path exists between an audio output (loudspeaker) and the input sources (mostly microphone). To counter this, SMS 480 has a built-in auto feedback detection and elimination feature. The system deploys advanced processing algorithms to identify and precisely remove only specific parts of the frequencies causing feedback, rather than cutting out large sections of your sound.
This adaptive automatic feedback suppression technology helps mitigate unpleasant feedback loops, howling and whistling. Additionally, the system’s built-in sine wave signal and pink/white noise generator are handy during speaker frequency testing and calibration.
